FINAL WORD

How powerful are the top search engines?

Just look at some facts & figures about these search engines:

Inktomi receives over 48,000,000 visitors a day.
(Inktomi provides an estimated 40 percent of the total search market. Inktomi search database is used by several top search engines and sites such as America Online, Freeserve.net, Goto.com, iWon.com, LookSmart, HotBot, MSN, NTT and Yahoo!)

Google receives over 12,000,000 visitors a day.

Ask Jeeves
receives over 4,000,000 visitors a day.

This is just three of the search engines SubmissionImpossible.com lists your web site with If you just multiply the # of sites we submit your URL to with the # of visitors to those sites, the amount of exposure of your site gets is astronomical!

How long will FFA's, directories or search engines list my URL?

Directories and search engines are the best place to have your sites listed on. They have a variety of conditions for indexing & re-indexing sites on there engines. If you meet their criteria your site will stay ranked, if you do not they will drop your site. Search engines use crawlers to compile lists for users based on user input keyword matches. They check information on web site pages, including meta tags. Directories are compiled by humans. They compile list of matches to users based on site submission description.

Hybrid Search Engines are search engines that maintain an associated directory. If your site is included in a search engine's directory is probably a combination of luck and quality. You can "submit" your site for review, however there is no guarantee that it will be accepted. Reviewers often research sites submitted to announcement sites, and may choose to add sites that are interesting to a category.

Free for All's (FFA's) limit the number of listings on there sites, anywhere from 25 to several hundreds per category. Your site will be posted and will be dropped when they reach the limit in your category, based on first in last out.

Why do some FFA's, directories or search engines not accepted my URL?

Some sites automatically disable engines that are not appropriate either for your site's geographic location (domain), classification and/or content. For this reason, you should always enter as much information about your site before going to the engine selector screen.

Many engines have specific rules as to the type of sites they accept for listing. If the data you have entered violates a rule for a given engine, it will be skipped.

SEARCH ENGINE HINTS: USE META TAGS!

There are several meta tags that you can use on your web site. I have found that there are four meta tags that get results- Description, Keywords, Index, and Revisit-after.  Many of the search engines utilize these to index or rank your web site.  It is important to keep these in mind and remember search engines are giving you free tools, abuse them and you may be dropped from their site.  You can lose your privileges if you abuse them enough.

<meta http-equiv="description" content="Widget World, Inc., West coasts largest widget wholesale & retail store.">

This meta tag contains a description of the contents of your web page or web site. It is best to keep it to 25 words or less. Keep it simple & direct. Do not attempt to submit false descriptions. This method is cliché & obvious, if you are caught you may get dropped from the index.  If you "abuse" them like this your domain or network may be permanently banned.

<meta http-equiv="keywords" content="Widget Company,widgets,big widgets,small widgets,short widgets,tall widgets,wholesale,retail">

This meta tag contains keywords which describes with single words or short phrases the contents of your web site.  Again, don't attempt to submit false keywords or repeat keywords over 7 times. If you "abuse" them like this your domain or network may be permanently banned.

<meta name="robots" content="index">

This meta tag contains information that tells the search engine to not only list the page you have submitted but also to list the entire web pages at your domain.

<meta name="revisit-after" Content="14 days">

This meta tag contains information that tells the search engine to come back and refresh your listing in 14 days.  Please DO NOT have them come back every day. Once or twice per month is MORE than sufficient. If you "abuse" them like this your domain or network may be permanently banned.
